It finally emerged into public view after the teenager returned to his schooling after a lengthy absence, and evidence was not hard to miss. He was thin and visibly unwell. It didn’t take long for officials at his school to notice his condition and realize that clearly, something was seriously amiss. Their swift reaction would soon initiate a series of events leading to a year of suffering in secret being revealed.
It was eventually discovered that the 16-year-old had been living under draconian controls within the self-same place that was intended to be his safe haven. He had been locked away in his bedroom for over a year with no access to the outside world. He had cameras on him so that he could be closely surveilled. A burglar alarm had been installed on the door of his bedroom so that he would not be able to venture out. He had been taken out of traditional schooling and had been made to pursue education online so that he had no interaction with the outside world.
The juvenile reported that he was hardly ever given enough nutrients for him to survive. The diet was quite limited; therefore, the juvenile was perpetually hungry. Eventually, the juvenile lost about 20 pounds. It was only after the authorities started investigating that the adoptive mothers started giving him enough food. This increases the suspicion that the duration maybe even longer.
Other than the lack of food and seclusion, the teen has also detailed being punished and maltreated. He has indicated being made to stand for a considerable amount of time until he was worn out, being subjected to cold, being shouted at, and being injured. At times, he would be held in isolation or restrained in a manner that prevented him from moving. He would also be injured using household items. All these have not only made him physically weak but also emotionally traumatized.
“The tragedy of the situation was that all of this was happening behind closed doors, out of sight, while the child was suffering in silence.” A “place of refuge, of nurturing, and of security” was, in effect, a “place of fear and of domination.” For “in excess of a year,” the teenager was denied the freedom, the nourishment, or the kindness to which all children were rightfully entitled.
Both of the women who are caring for him have been hit with over 900 charges each. Because of the number of charges, the level of abuse and neglect that has taken place is evident. Many people have been shocked by the events of this case, which raises a number of questions about how such abuse could go on for so long without being noticed. It is all thanks to the care that the school staff has taken that this teenager is no longer under those circumstances but is being helped. Though the healing process for this young man would not be very smooth, his case is a strong reminder that acting against any such situation which feels fishy is the key to saving a life because of, or despite, one caring moment.
