Police in Utrecht, Netherlands, recently found themselves handling a case they definitely don’t teach in the academy — one involving a very colorful, very innocent bird.
Officers had arrested a man on suspicion of shoplifting. Sitting calmly on his shoulder during the arrest was his feathered companion, completely unaware that anything unusual was happening. While the officers took the man into custody, they were suddenly faced with an unexpected question:
What do you do with the bird?
The police station didn’t have a cage. They didn’t have bird food. And they definitely didn’t have a protocol for detaining parrots.
But they did have compassion — and a sense of humor.
To make sure the bird was safe while its owner was being processed, officers placed the feathered companion in a jail cell. They made sure it had water and a sandwich, and they kept an eye on it while the paperwork was handled.
Police were quick to clarify:
The bird was not under arrest.
It wasn’t being charged with anything.
It was simply being looked after until its owner could return.
In other words, this was protective custody — not bird jail.
The moment could have quietly passed without much notice, but instead, the Utrecht police department decided to share it. They posted a photo of the bird sitting calmly in the cell on Instagram, and the internet immediately fell in love.
When Dutch media outlets picked up the story, they leaned fully into the joke. One outlet even added a small black bar over the bird’s eyes, jokingly “protecting its identity,” as if it were a suspect in a crime.
The image only made the situation more delightful.
Here was a bird — confused, colorful, and entirely blameless — temporarily housed behind bars, simply because it happened to be loyal enough to stay on its owner’s shoulder at the wrong time.
People online praised the officers for handling the situation with kindness and good humor. Others joked about the bird doing “hard time” or being the most polite inmate the station had ever seen.
Not long after, the situation resolved itself.
Once the owner was released, the bird was reunited with him and presumably returned home — free, unharmed, and none the wiser about its brief brush with the justice system.
No charges filed.
No criminal record.
No regrets.
The whole incident became a small, joyful reminder that even in serious professions like law enforcement, moments of humanity and humor still happen. Sometimes the most memorable stories come not from dramatic arrests or high-stakes cases, but from unexpected situations that call for a little creativity and kindness.
And somewhere in Utrecht, there’s now a bird who can technically say it spent time in jail —
even if it was just waiting for its human to come back.
