At the 2025 Wall Street Journal Magazine Innovator Awards in New York, 23-year-old singer-songwriter Billie Eilish took a podium in front of a gathering of some of the most influential and richest people in the world, including tech billionaires, and delivered a moment which turned out to be one of the highlights of the evening.
Before she began speaking, late-night host Stephen Colbert appeared on stage with exciting news for the audience, and that is that Billie has pledged *$11.5 million* of the funds from her current “Hit Me Hard and Soft” tour to help combat food insecurity initiatives, climate justice, and carbon pollution emissions. The audience reacted with applause at this piece of information being shared with them.
Then, during her acceptance of a Music Innovator Award, a Grammy Award-winning singer changed her message-and did so not out of anger but out of a certain thoughtfulness.
Billie thanked the people organizing the awards and expressed her views about what is happening in the world today, stating that “we’re in a time right now where the world is really, really bad and really dark.”
But then came the line that made headlines around the world.
In response to some of the wealthy attendees in the room – individuals like Meta Founder Mark Zuckerberg, who was seated nearby – she asked the following question:
‘If you are a billionaire, why are you a billionaire?’
“No hate, but give your money away, shorties.”
Her statement was rather drastic but couched in a moral observation rather than a pointed critique. She encouraged individuals who have an enormous amount of wealth to ponder upon how they could use such an ability to help others, perhaps indicating that they could do an even better thing in life than she had done in her own life.
In the audience, some were applauding and in stitches at her frank choice of words, but others – including Zuckerberg, reportedly, – were more subdued. Billie’s comments have come at a time when the debate on the subjects of inequality, climate change, and resource allocation is gaining momentum across the globe. She exhorts the wealthy to “use it for good,” and her statements have only fueled the debate on personal responsibility and private resources being used as a key solution to public problems.
By combining her private act of philanthropy—that is, the tour donation of multi-millions of dollars—with a public plea to others to donate in greater amounts, Eilish not only criticized issues of inequality; instead, she spread awareness and challenged people to think differently about how their power of influence and their wealth can be utilized.
