Sergeant Justin Hackbarth was seriously injured Thursday night after being struck by a vehicle on State Highway 9 while doing what he has always done — helping someone else. Hackbarth was outside his patrol car, assisting another driver, when the crash occurred, turning an ordinary night of service into a devastating moment for his fellow officers.
Norman police were the first to arrive at the scene, and to realize that one of their own was gravely injured was just too much to handle. The atmosphere was thick as officers labored hard in trying to assist their colleague, knowing how grave his injuries were.
To make sure officers would be able to stay with Hackbarth throughout the time he would be at the hospital, the Norman Police Department asked the Oklahoma Highway Patrol to assume the investigation. Law enforcement agencies around the metro stepped forward immediately to provide support, granting Norman officers the freedom to do the most important thing: standing beside Hackbarth and being there for his family during an incredibly difficult time.
Later, Troopers confirmed the crash involved three vehicles, including Hackbarth’s patrol car. Investigators noted that this incident is very complex in nature, with conflicting witness statements and many details still to be examined in detail. The driver implicated in the crash remained at the scene and is cooperating fully as the investigation continues.
Sergeant Hackbarth is a man who has served the Norman Police Department for over a decade and has garnered the highest regard for his selfless commitment to duty. Fellow officers described him as one who has always put others before himself on and off the job. He had surgery on Friday and still remains in the hospital receiving continuing medical treatment.
