Mom Pressed Pillows Over Son’s Face for years. 7-year-old lost his life at last

Sarah Safranek, 38, was sentenced to 35 years in prison after accepting responsibility for the passing of her little boy Nathaniel Burton.

Police were called to the Oregon, Illinois, home of the family when Nathaniel was found not breathing on February 17, 2021. He was rushed to the hospital, but doctors were unable to save him.

Court documents revealed heartbreaking details of Nathaniel’s life in the months before he passed. He had confided in his grandmother that his mother sometimes pressed pillows over his face and tried to stop him from breathing; he told her she once tried to hold him under water, abuse which reportedly started in 2018.

Nathaniel’s paternal grandmother said she contacted the state’s child services agency multiple times, leaving messages and expressing deep concern but never received a response.

Investigators later found disturbing online searches by Safranek beginning in 2020. Among them were questions like, “How long does an investigation take after a child dies?” and “I’ve had thoughts about hurting my kid.”

Nathaniel’s story has left many deeply shaken-the story of a little boy who needed love, protection, and safety, and whose quiet pleas for help were tragically overlooked.
