The family of Robert “Bobby” Cavanaugh is in mourning over an unimaginable loss as he was murdered on Christmas Eve in a senseless act of violence within his mobile home community in Madison Heights.
Bobby was known to those who knew and loved him as a kind, compassionate man who always placed other people first and himself last. His sister, Jane Thompson, described her brother as her hero: Someone whose life was one of selfless service to others.
“He spent his whole life helping those he could. He cared about everybody. That was just his nature,” Jane explained.
Friends and acquaintances also state that this quality of care and compassion cost Bobby his life.
According to eyewitness accounts, Bobby was riding his bicycle through the neighborhood when he noticed a man beating a dog cruelly. Bobby, who loved all animals and could never walk away when he knew suffering was taking place, stepped in to end this abuse and protect this creature. His neighbors report that he did not have to be asked; he just did what he knew was right.
Sadly, Bobby was physically battered with an object during the encounter. He fell to the ground, injured. EMTs were called, and Bobby was rushed to the hospital, where doctors battled to save his life. However, Bobby succumbed to the effects of the severe trauma.
The police have reported that the investigation is still ongoing as they attempt to establish exactly what happened leading up to the attack. The police have, however, confirmed the arrest of a suspect, who is a familiar face within law enforcement, over the death of Bobby. The police have also admitted reports that Bobby had been trying to save the dog.
For those who really knew him, Bobby’s passing has left a void. “He was a behind-the-scenes nurturer. He was a person who never wanted to call attention to himself, but he was always there to lend a hand when he was needed,” said one neighbor.
“He was looking out for everybody here,” said neighbor Rebecca Spencer. “He had the largest heart, particularly for pets. It’s tragic to know that it is his kindness that cost him his life.”
While Bobby’s family and friends are in mourning because of this tragic loss of life, they also recall his memory, not just in the way he died, but in the way that he lived.
