Kevan Chandler has lived his life with spinal muscular atrophy, a condition that requires him to use a wheelchair and limits his physical strength. But what his body could not do, his spirit never stopped imagining.
Like many young people, Kevan dreamed of seeing the world. He wanted to wander cobblestone streets, explore historic cities, and experience cultures far beyond his home. Yet traditional travel – especially backpacking across Europe – seemed impossible for someone who relied on a wheelchair. Narrow streets, stairs, uneven paths, and ancient buildings created barriers at nearly every turn.
Still, Kevan refused to let the word impossible have the final say.
Instead of giving up, he turned to the people who knew him best – his friends. Together, they began asking a different question: What if we found a way?
The answer came in the form of an idea as simple as it was powerful. Kevan and his friends designed a custom carrier backpack, strong enough and supportive enough for them to take turns carrying him on their backs. It wasn’t about heroics or sacrifice – it was about shared experience. About moving together.
With that backpack, Kevan and his friends set off on a journey through France, England, and Ireland. They climbed hills, navigated narrow walkways, explored historic landmarks, and moved through places that would have been unreachable by wheelchair alone. Each step was taken not by one person, but by many – friends trading places, adjusting straps, laughing, resting, and continuing forward.
What could have been a limitation became the heart of the adventure.
Their journey wasn’t just about seeing Europe. It was about trust. Kevan had to trust his friends completely with his safety. His friends had to trust each other, knowing when to step in and when to rest. The trip deepened their bond in ways no ordinary vacation ever could.
Photos and stories from the journey quickly captured attention. People were moved not just by the ingenuity of the backpack, but by the love and mutual care behind it. Kevan realized that what they had experienced wasn’t just a personal victory – it was a story others needed to hear.
After returning home, Kevan began writing and speaking about the trip. He shared not only the logistics, but the emotional truth of what made it possible: friendship rooted in dignity, not pity; support offered without hesitation; and the belief that everyone deserves access to adventure.
That message grew into something bigger.
Kevan founded We Carry Kevan, a nonprofit dedicated to helping other individuals and families facing mobility challenges. The organization provides adapted backpacks, resources, and encouragement, empowering people with disabilities to explore the world alongside those who love them. It shifts the narrative from independence as isolation to interdependence as strength.
Kevan often says that the backpack wasn’t about being carried – it was about being included.
Today, his story continues to open doors for others, reminding the world that accessibility isn’t only about ramps and elevators. Sometimes, it’s about people showing up for one another, sharing the load, and choosing togetherness over limitation.
