Less than two weeks after his life-saving liver transplant, beloved Cleveland Browns legend Bernie Kosar is back in the hospital, reminding once again how challenging and discouraging recovery can be. Early on Sunday, Kosar posted a short but warm video message on his social media accounts, stating that he was indeed “a little down” but still trying to keep a positive outlook in the midst of the setback.
True to his supportive nature, he took that time to motivate his followers with a gentle motto he had clung to: “Let’s have a winning day… U matter. Go Browns.” Even in his pain, Kosar’s message captured his eternal optimism coupled with an attachment to the fans who had supported him through his career and now onto his health journey.

Kosar didn’t get into specifics as to why he had to go back into the hospital, but several days earlier he’d said he was back at University Hospitals for a ‘routine check’ of his liver and blood levels. Because he’s been so open and transparent, the fans have been able to follow his ups and downs very closely.
For weeks, the Browns icon has been publicly documenting his journey-from anxiously waiting for a donor, to undergoing the liver transplant on November 17, to the emotional moment of finally returning home a week later. All along, he has shown remarkable courage and vulnerability, documenting the experience with honesty and gratitude.
Among the poignant moments during this period was on Thanksgiving, when Kosar took a moment to honor his young donor, 21-year-old Bryce Dunlap. It was an emotional donation of a $25,000 check to Bryce’s family-the life that saved mine. The act went through widespread admiration to show how strong Kosar felt about being grateful and compassionate, with much respect to the selfless act of the family that made his survival possible.
Kosar’s fight has struck a chord in the hearts of fans throughout the country, rather than just in Cleveland, representing determination, hope, and what is attainable with the support of a community. His supporters sent messages hoping he faced the day as strongly and humbly as he had while on and off the field. While still in medical care, the Browns legend keeps on letting everyone know how hope, perseverance, and gratitude all prevail. Though it was an unexpected return to the hospital, Kosar’s message was clear: he was fighting, he was thankful, and he was willing to keep on inspiring others, one day at a time.
