Along the historic tracks of the North Yorkshire Moors Heritage Railway, three small newcomers have recently taken on an unexpected new role. Titch, Clinker, and Ash—three stray black kittens—have gone from sleeping rough near the railway line to becoming officially “employed” members of the Grosmont station team. Their job title? Railway cats, carrying on a tradition that stretches back decades.
The kittens were first discovered huddled near the tracks, clearly in need of care and shelter. Rather than being shooed away, they were welcomed by station staff who immediately recognized their potential. Grosmont station, with its collection of old buildings, workshops, and storage sheds, has long relied on resident cats to help keep rodents under control. For generations, these feline “mousers” have been as much a part of the railway as the steam engines themselves.
