A community is gathering with heavy hearts to remember a young girl whose kindness left a lasting mark on everyone she met.
A memorial service for Emma Elizabeth Biffle, 14, will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, January 4, at the Cain Center in Cornelius. The space was chosen intentionally — a place large enough to hold the love, grief, and support surrounding Emma’s life. Arrangements are being handled by Cavin-Cook Funeral Home. Family members have shared that a larger celebration of life honoring Emma’s father, former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle, and his wife Cristina Grossu Biffle will be announced at a later time, once loved ones have had space to grieve.
Emma’s life was tragically cut short in a plane crash in Statesville, when a small aircraft went down shortly after takeoff while attempting an emergency landing at Statesville Regional Airport. All seven people onboard were lost, including Greg and Cristina Biffle, their young son Ryder Jack, Emma, and three others — Dennis Dutton, his son Jack Dutton, and Craig Wadsworth. The loss has rippled through the community, leaving many struggling to understand how such a bright family could be taken so suddenly.
At Davidson Day School, where Emma was a student, she was known for her gentle nature and quiet kindness. She didn’t seek attention, but she had a way of making others feel comfortable and seen. Friends remember her soft laugh, her warmth, and the way she showed care through small, thoughtful gestures.
Emma is survived by her mother, Nicole Biffle, with whom she shared an especially deep and loving bond. Family members say that connection defined much of Emma’s life — a relationship built on trust, understanding, and unwavering love. She is also survived by her grandparents Russ and Sara Lunders, her stepfather Stephen Agnew, her stepsiblings Eli and Hannah Agnew, her grandmother Sally Biffle, and many extended family members who cherished her dearly.
Those closest to Emma describe her as joyful, compassionate, and sincere — the kind of person who could lift others simply by being present. She carried herself with grace beyond her years, offering kindness freely and without expectation.
