The day that began as a blissful, normal day for Andrew Clark and his loved ones got transformed in a way that none of them could ever have envisioned.
Andrew Clark, 43, had been in high spirits, declaring that it had been “one of the best days of my life, purely on the basis that my football team has won.” He had been enjoying himself immensely, as he always did, in the presence of the people he loved most in the world. Later, he and his wife, Cairistine, decided to visit the local supermarket for some shopping, unaware, as they were, of what lay in store for them.
While Andrew was waiting in line at the checkout counter, a man cut in line in front of him. Andrew replied calmly about the incident, which seemed to resolve the issue. However, the man acted angrily despite the issue being resolved without further words in the store.
As Andrew and his family left the supermarket, the same man came up to him again. He suddenly punched Andrew once. Andrew was knocked down by the punch, and he was severely injured. Andrew was rushed to the hospital.
“He never recovered.”
Andrew passed away three days after, leaving his family in shock and unimaginable grief.
Cairistine claims she was just a few steps behind her husband. She could see everything that happened. She ran to Andrew’s side as help emerged, holding him because she thought he died in her embrace. The perpetrator ran away immediately with the young boyseat passenger.
The perpetrator was later apprehended and eventually jailed for five years and three months.
In Andrew’s family, there is little comfort to be found in the sentence handed down to the man who robbed them of so much. “No amount of time can make up for what they’ve taken from us,” says Cairistine, who describes Andrew as a kind, generous man who always put family first.
The teenage daughter of the couple made a very emotional statement in court. She told the court that for her, in addition to being a father, he was the best friend that she had. She also revealed that just thinking about life without him was just not possible.
The family was not able to stay in the courtroom to see that the sentencing procedure was over due to the fact that the pain of listening to all of it was just too much to handle. Cairistine also went on to state that she believed that the sentences handed down do not appropriately account for the loss that has to be incurred due to an event of sudden violence.
Andrew’s death is a reality and a reality that has changed everything for everyone who loved Andrew most—his daughter foremost, who is now living life without her father’s guiding influence and with his love and physical presence gone. What once was to be a day of joy and celebration has now ended in catastrophe and has left an imprint of sorrow on generations to come.
