15-YEAR-OLD NONVERBAL AUTISTIC TEEN JEFFREY EPPS FOUND, ‘HE WALKS WITH GOD NOW’

The community in Baldwin County with faces full of hope and broken hearts came together to support volunteers searching for 15-year-old nonverbal autistic teenager Jeffrey Epps, who went missing from his home on Monday.

As the word got out about the disappearance of Jeffrey, a wave of support followed. Dozens of volunteers came out hoping to assist, trudging side by side through the thick woods, the mud, and the flooded areas. Their aim, their purpose, was simple: To get Jeffrey home.

The search teams functioned in conjunction with the police, using K9 units to search deep into the forested areas, which proved a complicated task due to the difficult terrain and restricted vision of the search parties. Nevertheless, the searching teams refused to relent despite this physical and mental toll in the hope of finding Jeffrey alive.

But Wednesday afternoon saw that hope turn into heartbreaking news. Searchers found Jeffrey, and the confirmation came that he had passed away. The news was delivered softly by the authorities, who said, “He walks with God now.” This news brought many to tears, who had been waiting days for the miracle of finding Jeffrey.

Among those who searched was a Jamie Steinmeyer who had actually taught Jeffrey in the past. She recalled Jeffrey as a happy and kind student who loved numbers and books and showed compassion towards everyone who was near.

“He brought light into the classroom,” she said. “Jeffrey had a beautiful spirit.”

People came from well beyond the boundaries of Baldwin County in order to help. Blake Connolly was one of them, who came all the way from Jones County. Connolly explained that people were holding on to the hope that Jeffrey was lying underneath a tree or was just waiting for them with his wave of help.

However, the heartbreaking end results have brought the community together as it is now praying, through upliftment by the Epps family, with those from the entire region who are now trying to cope with the heartbreaking experience. Even though Jeffrey’s life was all too brief, the love that was evident throughout the search is a testament to the strength of community and the enduring strength of community, a reminder that within the darkness, community will come together for one another.
