Authorities in Pennsylvania say they are preparing to pursue the highest punishment allowed against two foster parents accused in the death of 9-year-old Renesmay Eutsey, whose body was tragically discovered inside a tote bag that had been placed in the Youghiogheny River.
Charged are: Kourtney Eutsey, 31, and Sarah Shipley, 35, who remain in jail without bond. The severity of the case prompted prosecutors to file notices laying out the most aggravating factors-a rare early step taken when seeking the highest possible sentence.
Renesmay was first reported missing in early September. Shortly thereafter, investigators started to get concerned when another child who was living in the foster home said they saw the caretakers harm Renesmay and place her inside a tote bag, sealing it inside of a larger trash bag.
The same child reported hearing loud noises and thereafter seeing Renesmay, also confused whether she was hurt or had “passed away.” Family members later had to explain what that meant.
An autopsy revealed long-term injuries, bruising, and poor care. Renesmay weighed only about 45 pounds, far below what is typical for a child her age.
Officials also confirmed Renesmay was biologically related to both women, who were caring of five children in total. The remaining four children have been transferred to another foster home for their safety.
Prosecutors say, as the case develops, their focus is clear: to seek full justice for Renesmay.
