The song was written by Pete Ham and Tom Evans, members of the Welsh rock band Badfinger, in the early 1970s. At the time, they were talented, ambitious musicians signed to Apple Records the label founded by The Beatles. From the outside, it looked like a dream start.
Behind the scenes, it was a trap.

In 1975, Pete Ham was overwhelmed by debt, legal battles, and the sense that he had been betrayed by the people meant to protect him. At 27 years old, he died by suicide. Three days later, his daughter was born.

Years later, after continued disputes and financial strain tied to the same stolen earnings, Tom Evans also took his own life. He was 36. The song that connected them would forever carry a quieter, darker echo.
The legal battles over Badfinger’s catalog continued long after their deaths. While some settlements were eventually reached, the damage was irreversible. No prison sentence ever matched the cost paid by the artists themselves.
Today, “Without You” is remembered as a love song. It plays at weddings, heartbreaks, and quiet moments. Few listeners know it was written by two men who never saw justice for their work and who didn’t survive the system that profited from it.
