Nevada authorities said an 11-year-old boy on his way to school died after a road-rage incident escalated into a dangerous confrontation between two drivers.
Henderson Police Chief Reggie Rader said the whole thing started about 7:30 a.m. as one driver attempted to pass another vehicle by using the shoulder of the road. The two engaged in a heated exchange, during which time the 22-year-old driver, since identified as Tyler Matthew Johns, allegedly fired one shot toward the other car, striking the child inside.
The boy’s stepfather was driving the vehicle and then struck Johns’ car. Both vehicles were able to pull to the middle of the freeway. Both men exited their vehicles and continued arguing until officers arrived.
Police then took Johns into custody, with charges including open murder and releasing a round into an occupied vehicle.
Chief Rader said the young boy was a passenger in the car with the stepfather. Johns was alone in his car. Despite quick help from first responders and hospital staff, the child could not be saved.
Rader used the sad incident to call on the public to be calm on the roads as busy holiday seasons were nearing. He reminded everyone that a precious life was lost over something that never should have escalated.
“We lost an 11-year-old today who was simply on his way to school,” Rader said. “Please be patient on our roads. We all share them, and we need to look out for one another.”
He added that no moment of frustration in traffic is worth destroying lives — whether by losing a loved one or facing lifelong consequences. Rader encouraged everyone to slow down, take a deep breath, and remember the value of every life.
