The mom of 9-year-old Brie Bird, Kendra, is clinging to the last memories she made with her daughter

The mom of 9-year-old Brie Bird, Kendra, is clinging to the last memories she made with her daughter, much of which now means the world after her little girl passed away following a long and brave fight against advanced cancer.

It wasn’t until just one week before Brie’s death that life still felt almost normal. Kendra remembers sitting quietly with her daughter, chatting about Christmas wishes and discussing a movie they watched the night before together. They made simple, loving plans to sleep side by side on Christmas Eve, anticipating being close. Not long after that conversation, Brie drifted into sleep-and her voice was never heard again.

Kendra stayed with her daughter in those last hours, as had Brie’s father, holding their child, whispering softly the words they had said to her a million times during nine years: how much she was loved, how special she was, how much her life mattered. Moments of tenderness and dedication are permanently carved into their hearts.

In the days since, Kendra has shared that their home will never feel the same without Brie’s laughter and presence. Still, she says her family is committed to honoring her daughter’s life by choosing love, kindness, and joy-the very qualities Brie embodied. While her parents struggle to understand why this happened, they take comfort in believing that Brie is no longer suffering and is finally free.

For Brie, it began back in 2020 when doctors located a large tumor in her abdomen and found that the cancer had already begun to spread to her spine. That was followed by nearly two years of treatments, difficult hospital visits, and strength from a little girl far beyond her years. When the doctors announced remission, her family celebrated with both relief and hope.

But this past January 2024, that hope was then dashed when the cancer recurred. By summer, Brie entered hospice care and bravely chose to spend her remaining time at home, surrounded by the ones who loved her most.

In her last months, Brie’s bravery extended way beyond her family. She had shared her journey with over a million people around the world, teaching so many people about honesty, strength, and a bright spirit. Her story even reached the cast of Wicked, who surprised her with thoughtful gifts and a private early screening of the film.

When Wicked was released worldwide in November, Brie and her family marked the moment together at home — grateful to have reached a date that once felt uncertain and far away. Though Brie’s life was heartbreakingly short, her impact was enormous. She leaves behind a legacy of bravery, love, and light — and a reminder that even the youngest hearts can change the world.
