In particular, this is one Christmas that holds special significance for one mother living in El Paso.
Theresa Troia, 36, is ringing in the holiday season with a present she once simply prayed for – all five of her babies under one roof.
Only last year, Christmas looked very different. Theresa was pregnant, overwhelmed, and living in fear every day. Because the quintuplets posed so many risks, each and every day was spent praying for the lives of all the babies. Hope existed, but doubt was evident.
Today, this hope has become reality.
Theresa is now nurturing five healthy babies, Kyla, Joseph, Jaxon, Viviana, and Isabella, after a long wait, hospitalization, and many highs and lows. The quintuplets were born very prematurely, at just over 28 weeks, and all of them needed intensive care. They had a long, hard journey, which included many beeps of monitors, doctor’s visits, and waiting.
Though four of the babies got to go home after some time, another stayed in the hospital for a couple of months more. Theresa reveals that despite all four babies being in the house, she felt like something was missing. This was until the last baby got discharged in November when she finally felt whole. This was exactly what she had longed for since birth.
Making the story all the more astonishing is Theresa’s own history. She is a quadruplet herself, having been raised with three brothers. She never, however, thought that one day she would be a first-time mother to five children. This is especially true since it would not be the result of any conception or fertility procedures.
Two of the girls are also twins, who shared a placenta, making the pregnancy even more complicated, as everything about the twins’ pregnancy is rare and high-risk to begin with.
But now, instead of hospital hallways and worrying, Theresa is embracing the simple pleasure of being at home. It’s not about Christmas presents or Christmas decorations for this Christmas. It’s about quiet moments such as putting little stockings on the chimney, reading bedtime stories, and calm Christmas Eve nights.
For Theresa, this season means thanks, love, and the miracle of togetherness. It took months of waiting, watching, and hoping, but her greatest wish has finally been fulfilled.
