There was a profoundly disturbing and sad scene in Florida when police escorted in on 911 call put through by an 8-year-old girl who claimed she thought her mom was being harmed. What police found when they broke into the home left them shaken to their cores.
The house reportedly housed 34-year-old Amy Angela Alfonso and her three offspring, who are 1, 8, and 10 years of age.
“The house is in an extremely dangerous condition,” said Officer Dennis Ekins of Little Rock Police.
“There are floors layered beneath trash, decaying containers of food, clothing scattered about, broken toys, and dog feces in several rooms,” Officer Ekins said.
In fact, one couldn’t walk through the house without damaging trash bags filled with furniture, clothing, and who knows what else.
“It smells of trash,” Officer Ekins continued.

However, as the officers began to investigate, they discovered even more horrifying information. It was discovered that none of the three children had been to school for over a year. Instead of being in an environment conducive to learning, the kids were being raised in seclusion, immersed in filth and terror.
The police were also provided with accusations of violence within the household. The woman’s boyfriend was arrested on the spot for his alleged connection to the accusations of violence within the household. Shortly after, Amy Alfonso was arrested for various accusations of neglect of the children. The authorities state that the conditions and circumstances posed a severe threat to the children’s well-being.
This has left people trying to make sense of the trauma that may be experienced by these children. Being in dangerous conditions, lacking education, and being vulnerable to violence may lead to long-lasting psychological trauma, particularly for such young children.
“It’s heartbreaking,” said one officer, commenting on how it is rare that it is necessary for a child to call 911 in order to get help.
However, no child must become the protective agent of him- or herself and siblings. Childhood must be a life of protection, care, and loving support, not of survival. However, as the situation unfolds, child protective agencies have been brought in to make certain that the children are afforded the best possible protection and stability that they deserve.
