Finally going home for the very first time is an 18-month-old New York girl, and her homecoming couldn’t be more perfect because it happens just in time for Thanksgiving.
To little Leah Montayes Macias, “home” has always meant hospital rooms, machines, and medical teams. This young girl has spent each and every day of her young life in a total of three different hospitals while continuously fighting battle after battle. Everything changed this week. On Thursday, her parents, Stephanie and Andy, hoisted her into their arms and strolled out of the children’s hospital she’d lived in for the last year.
“It’s the moment we’ve dreamed about,” Stephanie said. “Leah has shown us what true strength looks like.”
Little Leah’s journey began well before she was ready. She was born at just 24 weeks, weighing only 1.3 pounds-smaller than many people’s hands. Because of her very early birth, she faced a litany of terrifying challenges, which included a heart issue caused by a vessel that didn’t close correctly, a brain bleed, fragile lungs, dangerous pressure in her lungs, and the need for serious breathing support around the clock.
Doctors said she was incredibly fragile when she first arrived – a tiny fighter that needed constant monitoring and powerful respiratory assistance to survive. But with each passing day, through therapy and patience and that kind of determination only a baby warrior can have, Leah slowly began to grow and strengthen.
Today, the little girl who once couldn’t move without help is a bright, bubbly toddler – one who laughs, wiggles, and even tries to dance. Her mom says when she first reached the children’s hospital, Leah could barely move at all. Now, she brightens up every room she’s in.
While Leah will still use a bit of oxygen at home and continue with routine check-ups, her medical team is confident: she has a beautiful future ahead of her.
When people look at how far she’s come, one thing becomes crystal clear: her progress is nothing short of miraculous. Leah is living proof that babies born extremely early can grow, thrive, and fill the world with joy. This Thanksgiving, her family is celebrating the homecoming they’ve been waiting for, for 18 long months.
