His baby will grow up hearing how brave his father was – honoring sgt Richard Gracia

The La Marque community is carrying a heavy sorrow today, as they say goodbye to someone who truly made a difference. Sergeant Richard Garcia with the La Marque Police Department died Wednesday morning after a courageous and longtime fight with cancer.

For over 20 years, Sgt. Garcia dedicated his life to protecting and serving the people of La Marque. He was known not only for his professionalism, but for the compassion and warmth he brought into every interaction. To his coworkers, he was far more than a fellow officer – he was a mentor, a steady voice of guidance, a loyal friend, and a shining example of what it means to lead with both strength and kindness.

His impact went far beyond the badge he wore. Sgt. Garcia’s leadership helped mold this department, and his genuine care for others left a mark on everyone who had the opportunity to know him.

He is survived by his loving wife, also a law enforcement officer, and their four children, one of whom is a baby. Now, as his family, friends, and brothers and sisters in blue navigate this tremendous loss, they are asking the community to keep them close in their hearts, thoughts, and prayers.

The police department shared that his absence has left an incredibly deep void-one which words can barely explain. Yet they remain grateful for the years they had with him, lessons he taught, and for the enduring legacy he leaves behind.

“Rest in peace, Sgt. Garcia. We will remember you always.”
