Husband takes his wife’s life and then his own, before their first wedding anniversary.

A car that looked as if it had been parked normally on Route 14 outside Harvard, Illinois, contained a tragic truth. That car held 30-year-old Brandon Dumovich and his wife, 29-year-old Rachel. Just like Brandon and Rachel, they had known each other since they were kids. It is as if they had finally found what they were looking for, and that would end as it began – tragedy.

The tragic truth that eventually came out included both having been shot once and a gun still being inside the car. It was determined Brandon shot Rachel and then himself.

It’s an ending that none of their family and friends would have ever envisaged for a couple who had intertwined lives for more than 15 years. But after remaining close amidst school, life, and distance, they eventually began dating in 2022. By October 2024, they were married with an event that should have commenced a new life chapter. But amazingly, none of them had marriage listed in their obituaries.

Only hours before they were discovered, Rachel changed her profile picture to a photo of herself and Brandon and posted a picture from a trip to Greece. Below it, she wrote:

“Forever chasing sunsets. Wishing we were back in Greece.”

A headline that weighs increasingly heavily with meaning.

Brandon, who came from Barrington, Illinois, had been with the U.S. Navy. Rachel, a University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee graduate, worked as an employee in the human resource sector and was remembered as someone who showed great concern and always fought for others.

The police have assured that there is no danger to society. But for two families, life will never be the same. Because two young lives, once so full of history and hope and shared dreams, are lost. And all that remains are memories and questions with no answers. It is hoped that a source of strength and comfort will be realized for both sets of families within the days that lie ahead as they attempt to carry on as best they can with what they have been left.
